An Easy and Quick Look at the National
Do-Not-Call Registry
With over 55% of your telephone book listings on either the
National or State “Do not Call List” times have changed. For any
salesperson or organization promoting products your potential
customer base just shrunk over 50%.. Looking at the official
startup in 2005, the FTC and Department of Justice have
collected millions and millions in fines from violators. Working
diligently on only 16 lawsuit s alone, $16,000 million was
received from the offending firms.
The Do-Not-Call List is so popular that in the first year
62,000 million signed on, and right now the numbers on the
lists exceed more than 150 million.. During the first twelve
months over 428,000 complaints of violators had been filed. Plus
the law is so simple to enforce. The Federal Trade Commission
FTC), any of the states, and even private citizens may bring
these civil actions in federal district courts to enforce the
actions. This is really a slap to the face of salespeople trying
to conduct sales through outdated methods. Maybe they have time
to waste, but the people they call are becoming very impatient.
Who is protected by the National Do-Not-Call Registry?
The registry applies to any plan, program or campaign to sell
goods or services through interstate phone calls. This would
include the telemarketers who solicit the program, in addition
it includes the sellers who arrange to provide goods or
services to consumers, Consumers telephone numbers are sorted
and available by AREA CODE. Every organization registered will
have a choice of downloading a complete and somewhat updated
list of numbers from the area codes requested. A prospective
customer who receives a phone call, when they are listed on the
do-not-call registry, could simply contact the FTC online or
call toll-free number. The complainer only needs to know the
date of the call plus either the incoming phone number or
business name. The FTC does everything else on the person’s
behalf, including imposing a fine of up to $11,000.
EXEMPT from the Do-Not-CALL regulations are companies which you
conduct business with, most charities, political organizations,
and telephone surveyors. Also people who have just registered
their number in the last 31 days are exempt..Currently many
prize promotion companies are walking the tightrope.
NO CELL PHONE NUMBERS may be called for solicitation of buying
goods or special opportunities.
THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION is that the
do-not-call registry does not apply if you are calling business
people and not just consumers. A little unknown one is that you
can be fined if you did not follow proper procedures before
calling someone that is not even listed on the do-not-call
registry
